Facebook Introduces Group Shopping

The latest integration for the Facebook or ‘meta’ app is, you guessed it, a shopping feature. Across all platforms, integrated shopping is becoming more and more important and developers appear to be focused on making this process more prevalent and streamlined than ever.

This particular addition is to allow users to shop for and find products with friends, other creators and within groups. The new features which make this possible are ‘Product Recommendations’ and ‘Shops in Groups’. These are deigned to bridge the gap between community and e-commerce and make a space for sharing great products and finds with other users. Not only does this build trust in brands through community but also allows for brands and creators to build relationships with potential customers.

How does it work?

Shops in Groups

Facebook announced its intentions to integrate group monetisation features such as shops, fundraisers and subscriptions at its Facebook Communities Summit hosted earlier this month. Shops in Groups is the fruition of this proposal. It enables admins of Facebook groups to set up an online store on their associated Facebook Page and it’s up to the admins where this money goes (whether that be donations or personal gain). Yulie Kwon Kim, Meta’s vice president of Product Management, pointed out that many group admins are volunteers, and these shops could offer them a revenue stream for their work. “The money goes to the group admin, and they can decide how they want to use it,” she told TechCrunch. “This is a great way for people to sustain and keep the group going.”

Product Recommendations

Facebook also observed  that users were often asking for product recommendations in groups. This makes a lot of sense in that it is a natural progression of the community that these groups form, and individuals often seek advice from people they trust in this way. Think about a skincare or makeup group — now, if a user mentions a product that is listed in a Facebook shop, they can tag it and embed it into their comment. Top product recommendations from groups will also appear within users news feeds.

It will be interesting to watch for more developments to come as Facebook expands into Metaverse and as they potentially continue to open up new ways for users and creators to make money, connect and influence.

What do you think of the new updates? Will you use Group Shopping?
