How To Recover A Disabled Instagram Account
Mid last year I logged into my @nikkimilne_ Instagram account with 55,000+ followers only to be instantly logged out with a message saying “Account Disabled for violating the terms of Instagram” my heart dropped…. I know how hard it is to retrieve a disabled Instagram account and I know many that have never been able to recover it…ever again!
I must admit I wasn’t having a full-blown meltdown, you see over the last 6 years I had deliberately and strategically built my business with marketing methods that don’t rely on the platform but still I was highly concern that I would lose access to my community that I touch base with daily and have taken year and years to build.
Here are some steps that helped me gain my account back after two weeks.
The First Sign your account has been disabled.
If your Instagram account is disabled, you’ll see a message telling you when you try to log in.
Accounts that don't follow Instagram’s community guidelines or terms of use may be disabled without warning.
Disabled accounts are still visible to other users, but the account cannot post or engage with content on Instagram.
Did Instagram just disable your account for no apparent reason? In this blog, I will show you how to recover a disabled Instagram account.
First, let us talk about what are some reasons why your Instagram account has been disabled.
Copyright issues – Sharing images that you don’t own (or took from other people who now want to take revenge)
Fake Identity – This is when someone reported you saying that you’re pretending to be someone else
Violating the Instagram Terms and Conditions – This can literally be anything from promoting products without using the hashtag #ad, using Instagram to scam people, buying fake followers or anything that the Instagram AI-powered algorithm finds odd with your account.
Sharing “controversial content”, political content or content that includes violence, racism, profanity, exploiting minors etc.
But the main issue with Instagram is that they usually don’t tell which policy you violated and you’re left guessing “What did I do wrong”?
If you believe your account was deactivated by mistake, do the detailed steps below:
Recover a Personal IG Account
Luckily, it is only 3 steps, in order to initiate the recovery process for personal IG accounts.
- Go to the Instagram Help Center and look for the option for "Deactivated Account". Here is the direct link.
- Select whether you have a valid government-issued photo ID (ex: passport, driver’s license, etc.).
- #3. Fill out the form and provide the appropriate information needed & Press send.
We found out that you can do this method without sending any ID. We highly recommend that you send your ID to Facebook/Instagram in order to get yourself a higher chance of taking back your account. It will take around 24-48 hours to respond, usually.
Recovering a Business Account
If you are trying to recover your Instagram Business account, this way will make sure you get it back. It is as quick as recovering a personal account, but you will need more vital information.
- Go to the Instagram Help Center and look for the option for the Business Deactivated Account. Here is the direct link.
- Select whether you have a valid government-issued photo ID (ex: passport, driver’s license, etc.).
- Fill out the form and provide the appropriate documents & Press send.
For a social media business account, you will need documents such as proof of business ownership and a government ID with the appropriate individual that is in the documents provided. Make sure to have an email in the documentation as well, in order for them to put that email as an admin.

- Fill up the form and submit
If you see an “I understand and wish to continue” checkbox, select it.
Now, complete all required fields, such as your full name, username, and phone number.
If you believe your post complies with all of the guidelines, please explain why you believe the content should not have been removed in the “Please explain why you believe the content should not have been removed.” box.
- Additionally, you can include a screenshot of the post; this is an optional step.
- Submit the form. After you submit the form, Instagram will send you an email to the email address you used to sign up.
- Open Instagram’s email
This email will contain all of the procedures necessary to reactivate your account. If you do not see the email in your inbox, check your spam folder.
Recover Instagram Account without Email or Facebook
This option to recover your IG account with an email or Facebook is available only for the latest versions of the application so it will be necessary that you update the Instagram app on your phone.
This method may be the easiest out of them all, which is how to recover your Instagram’s password without an email or Facebook.
What you can do is just put your phone number on the password recovery screen. Once you have entered your phone number, you will receive an SMS with a link to recover your password.
However, it is important that, when you create your profile on Instagram, you have put a real phone number to which you have access. Once you get that text from IG, make sure you follow the simple instructions and you will have your account recovered!
In conclusion,
In conclusion, after two weeks and various methods and attempts, my account was recovered. I am not sure which exact method worked or who it was that undisabled my account but either way I am so happy I recovered it!
My advice, try as many methods as possible and keep trying - don’t give up! Review the Community Guidelines carefully along with the posts on all accounts you've created. Keep in mind that Instagram may permanently remove an account that repeatedly violates the Community Guidelines or Terms of Use. Be very careful when posting not just on Instagram but to all social media platforms, when using the content of other people, give credit.
However, If you don’t see a disabled message, you may be experiencing a login issue. If your account was deleted by you or someone with your password, there's no way to restore it. You can create a new account with the same email address you used before, but you may not be able to get the same username.
